Directions – Echoes
Originally released in 1997 on independent UK label Soul Static Sound, Echoes is ex-Tortoise member Ken Brown’s final release under the short-lived Directions moniker. Much like Tortoise’s music, Echoes works in that unique post-rock meets jazz, avant-garde, electronic zone of ’90s Chicago music where the samples and instrumentation flow together completely seamlessly and it’s hard to tell what’s live or sampled. Kieran Hebden would call Echoes “the blueprint for the Four Tet thing… it’s basically where I got the idea for everything from… it changed my life, this record.”
