Doris Norton – Personal Computer
Forty years ago, the Italian experimental artist Doris Norton helped cross a divide that changed music production: She linked an early Apple II computer to synthesized instruments, channeled them through Apple software and built tracks a newfangled way: on a hard drive. One result of that innovation, Personal Computer, is a lesson in ingenuity, curiosity and wizardry. Seven tracks with a motorik energy propelled by processors, complex chord clusters, knob squiggles, Roland beats and fake-snare stabs, it’s a raw, inspired document, one that moves like a punk rock chiptune version of Kraftwerk. – Randall
