Featured in the “Spiritual” section of Chee Shimizu’s Obscure Sound disc guide, 風の使者 (Messenger of the Wind) is the masterpiece debut album by acclaimed Japanese taiko drummer Eitetsu Hayashi. Released in 1983 after Hayashi left the influential taiko group Ondekoza, the album features percussionist Midori Takada, who is now known worldwide for her album Through the Looking Glass, Kayageum (Korean 12-string zither) player Chi Soungja, and vocals from Japanese post-punk band The Honeymoons. Ancient Japanese and Korean folklore blends together with contemporary minimalism along with synthesizers for a truly unique spiritual offering that exists somewhere outside of time. Recommended for fans of Mkwaju Ensemble, Yas-kaz, Steve Reich.
