Elements – S.T.
Featured in the “Organic” section of Chee Shimizu’s Obscure Sound disc guide, Elements is the debut album from fretless bass player Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb’s 80s jazz-fusion quartet featuring saxophonist Bill Evans (not the one you’re thinking of), and keyboard player Clifford Carter. Released after Egan was kicked out of the Pat Metheny Group, the album is a sophisticated blending of genres that transcends the usual tropes of “fusion” music. Opener “Color Wheel” showcases the deep Jaco Pastorius influence on Egan’s playing style (he actually studied privately with Jaco) with a bass harmonic groove along with Weather Report-esque synthesizer pads and melodies. A2 “Starward” is another highlight that hits a rare introspective jazz fusion reggae sound, that’s quite unique from any of the other fusion music released during this era.
