Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimiento explores Hermeto Pascoal’s concept of Universal Music, “a rejection of nationalistic tendencies in order to express all of one’s musical influences all at once,” on his latest full-length Mundo Solo for London’s Far Out Recordings. Nascimiento’s mastery of various string instruments, including 6, 7 and 10 strings, Oktav guitar and electric baritone guitar, is on full display here accompanied mostly by subtle synthetic textures and drones that linger long after each chord/note is played. It’s difficult not to hear the influence of Los Angeles’ ambient scene reflected in this music, though Nascimiento is certainly charting his own path here with strings rather than programs and modular circuits. The solitary feeling of the pandemic is also at play here; recorded at his home studio in Los Angeles in 2020, Mundo Solo is fundamentally the sound of a man alone with his instruments.
