Hyu – Inaudible Works 1994-2008
Osaka-based label EM Records continues to do the “lord’s” work uncovering hidden gems and pushing innovative contemporary music from Japan and beyond (see last year’s Air from Air). Their latest is a compilation of works from obscure ’90s / ’00s electronic producer Hyu, who released a few albums on Nobukazu Takemura’s Childisc label. “Wiggly” is perhaps the best descriptor of Hyu’s electronic compositions, but that doesn’t quite capture the delicate balancing act of complexity and youth-like charm that his music is able to achieve. You can almost imagine some of these sounds and melodies accompanying an arcade game, but it’s as if all the pixels and lines of code have suddenly become sentient and move on their own. Totally freak computer music, highly recommended for fans of ’90s Japanese IDM, Foodman, Susumu Yokota, Rei Harakami.
