An all-time jazz classic, Joe Henderson’s The Elements is a beautiful meeting of five singular talents propelled to cosmic dimensions by the one and only Alice ‘Swami Turiyasangitananda’ Coltrane. Henderson, who features on Coltrane’s 1970 spiritual jazz classic Ptah, The El Daoud, acts as bandleader here while Coltrane seems to be the spiritual guide, opening portals into inner and outer realms with her harp, tamboura, and harmonium. Though all four tracks are great, the clear standout here is the incredibly deep and spiritual B2 Earth, which features Coltrane playing a continuous drone while Henderson lets loose over a repeating tenor sax phrase. Later, the groove breaks down and unfolds into a free-flowing harp & flute duet with percussionist Kenneth Nash joining in with a spoken word piece on time. It’s an incredible journey and will certainly take you places, as long as you’re down for the ride.
