John Martyn – Glorious Fool
John Martyn’s attempt at going mainstream, Glorious Fool was released by Warner Elektra Atlantic, produced by his close friend / Genesis drummer Phil Collins, and featured Eric Clapton (who had previously recorded “May You Never”) on guitar. While the album didn’t quite breakthrough as intended, there are some crowning moments. “Please Fall in Love With Me” has a bit of the quiet stillness of “Small Hours,” but with Collins’ signature ’80s tom hits and more of an emphasis on Martyn’s vocal. “Couldn’t Love You More” becomes a textural full-band affair with an amazingly lush laid-back groove with the familiar transcendence of the original.
