Hiroshi Yoshimura – Soundscape 1: Surround

A city pop classic, Communication was originally released in 1985 by Junko Yagami, a talented singer-songwriter who has released over 20+ albums across a number of difference genres from “Kayōkyoku” standards and city pop ballads to boogie, synth-pop, and more since the late ’70s. This particular album has a distinctive electro-boogie sound produced by Yagami’s husband and longtime collaborator J.J. Stanley. While all tracks are great, it’s the peculiar electro-reggae tune “Johannasberg” that stands above the rest with it’s carefree, summertime groove. Featured on Time Capsule’s Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985 compilation, the track captures a particular moment when the influence of reggae entered Japanese music after Bob Marley and the Wailers toured the country in 1978.
