Klein – Star in the Hood

Star in the Hood is a collection of abstract drone r&b sound collage pieces from experimental darling Klein, the South London based multi-disciplinary artist, singer-songwriter, producer who was signed to Hyperdub in 2017 and handpicked by Bjork to tour with her in 2018. Across 55 minutes, Klein cuts, chops, and manipulates modern classical piano pieces, field recordings, vocal samples, and noise to craft introspective pieces that are at times floaty and dreamlike (“black star), and at other times completely dense, distorted, and chaotic (“postcode wars”). Klein’s singing voice appears sparingly, though one brief moment shines through on the less-than-a-minute long “winter,” which flips “Christmas Time Is Here” into a sort of ambient Y2K-era R&B track with that classic rompler nylon guitar sound. Recommended for fans of Mica Levi, Caroline Polachek, Laurel Halo.
