Various Artists – Now Thing: 15 Dancehall Instrumentals

The undisputed Queen of Reggae, Marcia Griffiths released her debut solo album in 1974 after a decade of singing professionally in Byron Lee and the Dragonaires band, recording at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One, and writing hits with Bob Andy as Bob & Marcia. Sweet & Nice became an instant classic in Jamaica and is considered by many to be reggae at its most soulful. The album features covers of songs by Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Van McCoy, Neil Diamond, and Ewan MacColl. Favorites include the brass call-and-response of “I’d Rather Be Lonely” and the spoken soulful word of “There’s No Me Without You.” Griffiths would later go on team up with Rita Marley and Judy Mowatt to form the I-Threes and push reggae to international recognition with Bob Marley & the Wailers.
