Moondog – Moondog 2

Slower than Molasses is a wonderfully peculiar set of “music for pianos, voice, and percussion” from New English composers Mark Lockett and Janet Sherbourne. Much like the community of artists surrounding New York’s Lovely Music, Lockett and Sherbourne (along with frequent collaborator Jan Steele) share an interest in pushing the limits of “modern classical” music, bringing in elements of jazz and various strains of world music into their compositions. Sherbourne studied ethnomusicology at Queen’s University, was a founding member of the English Gamelan Orchestra, and has also released an album of strictly Latin jazz. Title track “Slower Than Molasses” is a gorgeous 10-minute solo piano composition that moves along complex jazz-tinged chord progressions at half-speed. Another favorite A4 “All You Can Eat” brings in drum machines and synthesizers for a strangely funky slice of art-jazz-pop. Shoutout to Toronto’s Séance Centre for uncovering this one many moons back!
