Randy California – Kapt. Kopter And The (Fabulous) Twirly Birds
Guitarist, singer and songwriter Randy California was a founding member of Topanga Canyon psychedelic rock band Spirit. Following the group’s breakup in 1971, California spent most of his time playing in jam sessions at various Topanga Canyon clubs, including a legendary spot called The Corral where Canned Heat, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, and Captain Beefheart played. Those jams served as the foundation for California’s 1972 solo debut Kapt. Kopter And The (Fabulous) Twirly Birds. Returning to the influence of his friend and early mentor, Jimi Hendrix, the album features extended arrangements of songs by The Beatles, James Brown, Paul Simon, and others with California’s heavily distorted guitar improvisations taking center stage alongside Noel Redding (bass player of the Jimi Hendrix Experience). The album flew over most people’s heads at the time, but has since become a psychedelic rock cult classic.
