Saundra Hewitt – Saundra
New York vocalist Saundra Hewitt, also known as Sandy, released her one and only album in 1976 on the Japanese label Discomate. While this is Saundra’s only solo release, you can hear her vocals on the soundtrack for the 1974 film Lialeh with the great drummer Bernard Purdie. Purdie also played a big role in this album working out the rhythm tracks alongside Saundra and blessing every song with his ability to drum with finesse and control, while also adding his own unique flair and personality. A2 “Got A New Pair Of Shoes” hits every mark with mellifluous vocals, dynamic keys, enthralling tenor saxophone, and last but not least, a memorable Purdie drum break. Everyone involved in this record played a role in making this such a special piece of music, including Shiro Mori and Kinney Landrum, who notably have worked with Teruo Nakamura, and Bob Mintzer, known for being a member of the band Yellowjackets. – Ally
