Seu Jorge’s weathered baritone takes on canonical classics by Jorge Ben, Tim Maia, Michael Jackson, Roy Ayers, and more. While not a novel or interesting concept by any means (could even easily go wrong), the album shines and delivers through the sheer will and power of Jorge’s voice alone: his sleepy, effortlessly cool delivery on Ayer’s “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” somber and dark take on Ben’s “Errare Humanum Est,” loose but dynamic version of João De Aquino and Martinho Da Vila’s “Cirandar.” Jorge’s range and breadth of emotion overwhelmingly cuts through here and somehow takes these known, and seemingly untouchable classics into new territories.
