Speed, Glue & Shinki – Eve = 前夜
Featured in Julian Cope’s Japrocksampler, Speed, Glue & Shinki was a Japanese psychedelic rock power trio formed in 1970 by guitarist Shinki Chen and producer Ikuzo Orita. At this time, Shinki Chen was known as “Nippon’s Jimi Hendrix” and had already released an amazingly tripped-out, Sabbath-inspired, self-titled debut album. In his new band, Shinki would be joined by Filipino singer/drummer Joey Smith (Speed), who Shinki had discovered while performing at a shopping centre, and bassist Masayoshi Kabe (Glue). Smith’s wild, amphetamine-powered drumming fuels much of these blues-rock jams with Shinki sort of doing Zeppelin/Sabbath impressions on guitar. Despite the sloppiness and often lo-fi recording, there’s a certain charm and honesty that’s captured here with the group shamelessly pushing their drug usage to the limit and recording the results.
