Born in Cádiz, Spanish ambient pioneer Suso Sáiz played in local jazz circuits before moving to Madrid to study guitar at Real Conservatorio de Música. After graduating, Sáiz went on to study with legendary Spanish composer Luis de Pablo, who would crucially introduce the young artist to American minimalism. Together with singer Maria Villa and percussionist Miguel Herrero, Sáiz would form the pivotal Orquesta De Las Nubes, bringing together Spanish folk, minimalism, improvisation, and Non-Western music. A serial experimentalist, Sáiz would go on to launch a solo career exploring slightly more pop and rock adjacent sounds. His sophomore album En La Piel Del Cruce features members of Orquesta de las Nubes as well as Musica Esporadica. Much like his collaborative projects, ethereal ambient textures and endlessly looping patterns are the key sonic drivers though here, there’s just a bit more of an emphasis on groove with distorted guitars, fretless bass, and synthesizers meeting drum machines.
