The Higher Intelligence Agency – Colourform

Featured on seminal compilations including Warp’s Artificial Intelligence and Beyond’s Ambient Dub Volume 1, The Higher Intelligence Agency is the cult favorite live electronic project by Birmingham-based artist Bobby Bird. Released during a time “when electronic music was the next big thing,” HIA’s debut album Colourform is one of the great early ’90s “intelligent” electronic music albums and features a collection of futuristic dancefloor chillout tracks exploring ethereal soundscapes with sub-heavy basslines and downtempo grooves. Highlights include “Speedlearn,” a forward-moving psychedelic cruiser featuring female vocals, the Roland 303 acid tune “Re-Echo,” and closer “Ketamine Entity (Axiom Mix)” which sort of sounds a like a sci-fi version of a steppers reggae groove with Bird chanting, “Message from the Heart, Intelligence.” Recommended for fans of Autechre, Primitive Painter, Future Sound of London, etc.
