Yen – 卒業記念アルバム

The first Orb album to feature Berlin producer Thomas Fehlmann, Pomme Fritz is a bass-heavy techno dub exploration that pushed sample culture into deep new directions. Drawing from spoken word albums and TV snippets, Fehlman, Orb founder Alex Paterson, Kris Weston and guest Sun Electric’s Max Loderbauer mix pillowy, chillout-room beats with creepy voices of authority, whispered utterings of teenaged girls, out-of-context observations and hundreds of other curious samples of the kind that Boards of Canada would exploit a few years later. If you’ve never heard “More Gills Less Fishcakes” or album closer “His Immortal Logness” after smoking a spliff or gobbling some hallucinogens, drop everything and do so right now. – Randall
