Time Wharp – Spiro World
Spiro World (or One Must First Become Aware Of The Body) is the Leaving Records debut of Brooklyn-based artist Kaye Loggins aka Time Wharp. Unhinged to any particular music scene, the album lands sonically somewhere between jazz, ambient, modern classical, and kosmische with woodwinds, marimba, and cello dancing alongside Time Wharp’s joyous electronics and guitar. At times, the tracks almost sound like they were performed by a contemporary electronics-infused chamber orchestra, which could possibly be an influence from Loggins’ time studying at the revered Berklee School of Music in Boston. Other notable reference points include Manuel Göttsching’s Ash Ra Tempel, the Honky Tonk Nun Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, and 20th century minimalism (Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Mkwaju Ensemble). Listening to this record feels like being taken on a spontaneous road trip with no particular destination. Verdant rolling hills, desolate deserts, the slow winding up soaring snow capped mountains, a midnight beach side picnic; each track has a distinct personality, while meandering between various beloved genres.
