Fans of Vangelis’ epic soundtrack compositions may be surprised to learn that the Greek synth god’s first true solo effort actually sits in a more folk, psych, progressive rock zone and features the artist singing as well as playing a variety of non-synth instruments including various percussion, tabla, and flute. Despite having an overall different sonic palette than his later works, the foundation for Vangelis’ dramatic, large-scale mysticism seems to be already firmly set here. There are certainly a few flawed moments, but also some genuinely great highlights including the balearic psych rock classic B2 “Let it Happen,” floating ambient B3 “The City” and the primordial percussion, vocal choir, keyboards tune B1 “Ritual.”
