Watch How The People Dancing – Unity Sounds From The London Dancehall, 1986-1989
In 1985, King Jammy changed the trajectory of reggae music forever with his Casio keyboard produced digital “Sleng Teng” riddim. In the years following, digital dancehall would take over sound systems in Jamaica and beyond with all kinds of amateur artists being able to create music using a cheap Casio MT-40 and 4-track recorder. One of the significant crews to emerge during this era was Robert Fearon aka Ribs’ UK-based Unity Sound System. Compiled by Honest Jon’s, Watch How The People Dancing collects the raw digital sound of Unity featuring vocal and rhythm track “versions” that highlight the simplistic, but brilliant Jamaican ingenuity of the digi-dancehall riddim. Ribs: “There’s a whole heap of stuff that we did at that time, different even to the music, that we didn’t really know what we were doing, we just done it. This feeling on the records, we did that with everything we did, it was just the vibes that we were carrying then, it was all about one massive vibes.”
