Wayne Shorter – Night Dreamer
In between playing in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and joining what would be known as Miles Davis’ second great quintet, saxophonist Wayne Shorter makes his debut here for Blue Note records. Title track “Night Dreamer” is explained by Shorter in the linear notes as a 3/4 time floating feeling locked in a heavy groove, a dream-like paradox. He also confesses that his playing has become simpler and more emotional for this record. Indeed this music is moody and mysterious but also contains very approachable melodies, something that Shorter is synonymous for. Backing him is an all star cast of Lee Morgan on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. – Forrest
