Weekend was a British indie pop / post-punk band formed by Alison Statton following the split of Young Marble Giants in 1981. The group’s debut album La Varieté is a much sunnier affair than Young Marble Giants’ lone album Colossal Youth. Featuring nylon string guitars, saxophones, various percussion, strings, and Statton relaxed delivery, the album hits at a sort of ethereal, lounge, and post-punk hybrid zone with bossa and island influences. Not everything is sunshine and carefree times though. As one reviewer sums it up, “Weekend’s music played a lot like a vacation, with regrets.” Fittingly, the album title La Varieté draws from “the French term for popular radio, everything that’s not heavy rock; music drawing on diversity and depth.”
