Merope – Naktės

“Fela Kuti-meets-Kraftwerk-on-the-dancefloor” by French composer Hector Zazou, Congolese singer Bony Bikaye, and electronic music composers CY1. Released in 1983 on seminal Belgian label Crammed Discs, Noir et Blanc still sounds not quite like anything else with its wildly inventive modular synthesizers, live dub-style effects mixing, and abstract French-African vocal stylings. The group’s entire approach to this album centers on accidental and unpredictable events (Fred Frith just happened to be in town the week of recording + members of Aksak Maboul spontaneously added their contributions) giving the music a wonderfully organic, experimental feel that somehow manages to still sound relatively accessible.
