Futuristic East Coast club beats meet experimental rap on New Jersey-born DJ Haram and poet/rapper Moor Mother’s debut LP as 700 Bliss on Kode9’s iconic Hyperdub imprint. 1/2 of literary and artistic collective Black Quantum Futurism, Moor Mother aka Camae Ayewa wades through a range of subjects from the history of black dance music, the January 6th Capitol riots, and smashing the patriarchy while Haram’s percussion-heavy production keeps the punches rolling. At times, the duo’s compositions are almost playful with swirling, pitched-around vocals and tongue-in-cheek rhymes (“Capitol”), while at other times, the words cut deep with a ferocity, harsh noise, and machine gun-like textures (“Candace Parker”). “They rape our mothers while y’all just record.” As expected with Hyperdub releases, Nothing To Declare pushes the boundaries of what club music can say and be, while remaining a total joy to dance to.
