Active in the 1970s, Allspice was a funk/soul band from Hartford, Connecticut composed of nine members, including five vocalists and a horn section. Their self-titled debut album was produced by Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders and contained eight tracks, including the lush Rhodes-filled single “Slipped Away,” which was a minor hit in the United States. The group’s sound has been described as a sophisticated mix of funk, soul, jazz, and disco, with strong vocal harmonies, catchy melodies, and deep grooves. Despite the critical acclaim, the band would not be a commercial success, and Allspice disbanded shortly after the album’s release. However, the album has since gained a cult following among funk and soul enthusiasts, and has been reissued on CD. – Ally
