Baba Stiltz – Shame on Dry Land
The musically ambidextrous Swedish singer-songwriter, producer, DJ Baba Stiltz adds another layer to his story with his recently Guldbagge-awarded film soundtrack for Axel Petersén’s Shame on Dry Land. Formed out of demos recorded at a friend’s home in the Swedish Archipelago, the music captures a deep sense of unease in an idyllic mediterranean landscape. Various wind instruments form the main theme, which sounds somewhere between a drone and an insect call, while low-slung bass guitar sets the tone with increasingly ominous repeated phrases. A brief moment of levity, “Karema Goodbye,” pierces through the middle of the album with a wavy, psychedelic blues that feels a bit like being drunk on a boat. While not always obvious, Stiltz’s deft guitar playing is present across the entire album, often creating drones, swells, and dissonant textural elements a la Derek Bailey. It’s an impressive film soundtrack debut from an artist whose work spans hip-hop production, downtempo pop song, and club beats.
