David Darling – Cycles
Bradley Miller aka CKtrl is a reed player, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who has previously released on South London-based label and event series Touching Bass and collaborated with ISC favorite Duval Timothy. His work is steeped in introspection often sounding like a beautiful distillation of elements from jazz, r&b, classical, soul, pop, as well as bass music. Pandemic favorite Zero brings on vocalists Cerebra, anaiis, Annahstasia & Ananjah who contribute perfectly executed ’90s-leaning but still contemporary-sounding vocal lines and harmonies that add a pop sensibility to Miller’s free-flowing compositions. Title track “Zero” opens with a sort of avant-garde quality with flickers of soprano saxophone and cut up samples before settling into a slow, broken, minimal electronic groove that sways along while guitar links swirl around Mereba’s vocals. Highly recommended for fans of Tirzah, Duval Timothy, Sault, Nala Sinephro!
