DJ Lycox – Guetto Star

New sounds, forms and structures in contemporary dance music continue to flow from Lisbon’s Príncipe. In 2024, the label released three full-length albums from mainstays DJ Nigga Fox, DJ Lycox, and Nuno Beats (of RS Produções), while core member Nídia Borges linked up with percussionist Valentina Magaletti (Holy Tongue, Moin, Vanishing Twin) for one of the most exciting and unexpected collaborations of the year. Seven years after his debut LP, Lycox proves that he remains at the forefront of modern batida. Guetto Star, an ode to the “ghetto” sound at the core of his music, sees Lycox twisting kuduro and tarraxho with drill and other new alien forms. The rhythms here are complex and deep – you can feel the various percussion shifting and layering in ways that might seem well beyond comprehension to Western ears – but undoubtedly, no matter where you’re from, this music will make you move.
