Featured in the “Psychedelic section” of Chee Shimizu’s Obscure Sound disc guide, Dr. Aftershave And The Mixed Pickles is technically the third studio album by Missus Beastly, a krautrock band involved in the “Woodstock” of Germany which attracted over 100,000 visitors in 1978. The artist name and album title were switched on this album in order for the band to get around a contractual issue with their former label Telefunken. Dr. Aftershave And The Mixed Pickles features mostly instrumental jazz-rock with dual flutes, sparkling Rhodes keyboard, cosmic tones, progressive arrangements, and heavy psych-funk grooves that fans of Miles Davis’ electric period, Return to Forever, and Weather Report will enjoy. Also of note, guest vocalist Maria Archer from Embryo and Real Ax Band shines on A2 “High Life” with her instantly recognizable raspy voice and effortless delivery.
