Gabe Baltazar
Breezy Hawaiian jazz from local alto sax legend Gabe Baltazar, who played with the Stan Kenton Orchestra backing singers such as Nat King Cole, Jean Turner, and Ann Richards. Shared by our friend Vinyl Don and featured on the great Aloha Got Soul music blog, Gabe Baltazar’s self-titled sophomore album is a perfect mix of bebop and early fusion flavors with beautiful Rhodes piano and a wide variety of reeds instruments including soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones, piccolo, flute, bass flute, and bass clarinet. “I’m the luna of the group, the overseer. I give them them the old bebop tunes from my era and they give me the jazz fusion thing.” Be sure to check out the Aloha Got Soul blog for more Hawaiian rarities.
