Jimmy Giuffre 3 – 1961
Reissued and compiled by Manfred Eicher on ECM, 1961 presents clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre at his finest alongside his chamber jazz trio featuring Steve Swallow on acoustic bass and Paul Bley on piano. The compilation contains the complete material from the trio’s 1961 Fusion and Thesis albums along with a few new tracks. The music can be categorized “free jazz” in terms of its approach to improvisation but the sound itself is incredibly smooth, spacious, and flowing. Without a drummer, Giuffre and crew were “searching for a free sense of tonality and form.”
