“Dedicated to Andreï Tarkovski,” Myths 3. La Nouvelle Sérénité is a stunning collection of ambient soundscapes from three of the best in the game, Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, and Gavin Bryars. The compilation is one of the earliest releases on influential Belgian ambient label Sub Rosa and part of a “series of defining encounters… meant to be the beginning of an adventure.” Hassell’s track swirls around a hypnotic trumpet loop that functions almost as a raga drone alongside dripping percussion and DX7 electronic drums, bass, and keys. Harold Budd’s “Cartago Sand Dancing” has a gorgeous weightless feeling to it – comprised of what sounds like loose improvisation between Budd’s synth organ and Eugene Bowen’s steel guitar. Bryars’ “Sketch For Sub Rosa” is piano recorded with a deep consideration of space and room. If you’re a fan of ’80s ambient music, we highly recommend checking out Sub Rosa’s catalog which includes music from Gigi Masin, Steven Brown, Charles Hayward, Benjamin Lew, Bill Laswell, and others.
