Man Parrish – Brown Sugar
One of the important and influential figures in American electronic music and a contemporary of Art of Noise, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Arthur Baker, Kraftwerk, and Afrika Bambaataa, Brooklyn-born electronic artist Manuel Joseph Parrish aka Man Parrish first made waves around hip-hop clubs in the Bronx. His early tracks like “Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don’t Stop)” would provide the foundation for everyone from Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys, to Daft Punk and Missy Elliot. While he is most well-known for his electro classics, 1987’s Brown Sugar 12″ single features a softer side of “Man” with “Water Sports,” a deeply relaxing ambient track featuring fake field recordings of frogs, flowing water, synthetic choirs and flutes, bell tones, and heavy delay. The track is an early example of CAM (Computer Assisted Music) and credited with the note “All Instruments played by Macintosh Computer programmed by Man.”
