J.J. Cale – Troubadour

One of the holy grails of Nicaraguan Latin Funk, Poder Del Alma (Power of the Soul) is the self-titled debut release from a a 9-member supergroup assembled to play at the famous free concert of Santana in Managua in benefit for the 1972 earthquake. Members include legends of the Nica music / hippie scene including Román Cerpas (previously on Bwana), René “Chapo Domínguez (Los Rockets), and Edgar “El Gato” Aguilar. The group’s sound is a delightful fusion of psychedelic rock and Afro-Latin funk with electric guitar, heavy percussion grooves, ripping Hammond organ, horns, and Spanish male/female vocals. The album was unearthed and reissued by Discodelic, an Afro-Latin focused record store and collective located in the Mission of San Francisco, in 2024 and remains the heart and soul of the label and shop’s operation.
