Herbie Hancock – Crossings
Northern Song is the first of many classic ECM albums from Minneapolis based guitarist Steve Tibbetts and percussionist Marc Anderson. Recorded over the course of three days in Oslow, Norway, the album has a distinct emphasis on silence with many moments where the music simply falls away. Looking back, Tibbetts recalls, “At times I experience music ‘cinematically.’ What is felt through sound becomes a visual panorama. For instance, when I record in Norway, certain impressions and associations have an effect on the work we do in the studio: the light, the intense winter darkness.”
