Television – Marquee Moon
Part of New York’s underground punk scene in the late 70’s alongside Blondie, Velvet Underground, The Ramones, etc. Tom Verlaine and Television managed to both fit within and completely transcend the punk genre with their debut Marquee Moon. By lowering the distortion, simplifying their songs, and pulling influences from the surrounding poetry scene, Television created a subtler, more thought-provoking take on punk rock that later influence post-punk movements in the UK and American indie rock. For an in-depth history of the album, we highly recommend checking out Classic Album Sunday’s Album of the Month piece on Marquee Moon.
