The music made by the duo of Alice Hansen and Chuck Blazevic (aka Slow Attack Ensemble) harnesses negative space, echo and restraint to create sublimely dynamic songs. Like kindred spirits such as Broadcast, the xx, Young Marble Giants and Seefeel, Hansen Blazevic find both comfort and complexities in subtlety. They do so through synthetic and acoustic tones — fretless bass, marimba, piano, synths — channeled through a Chorus Echo tape delay and through a Revox reel-to-reel until songs float like microchipped feathers. On their fourth album, Wave Your Moonlight Hat, the duo cites as inspiration artists including Julee Cruise, This Mortal Coil and Young Marble Giants offshoot Weekend, which makes sense. Like You’ll Never Get to Heaven, each shares a desire to eliminate noise and distortion until all that remains is clarity of expression.
