Seep into the tranquil calm of a Japanese garden with the latest release on Organic Music founder Chee Shimizu’s always quality 17853 Records. Garden of Time features two extended compositions featuring trumpet, shamisen, tabla, and electronic. Something like ECM meets traditional Japanese music, the sound can be compared to the works of Codona by Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos, Colin Walcott, and Jon Hassell in the way that Eastern and Western tonalities are infused in an organic way with minimal, modular electronics used to heighten the ethereal atmospheres. Shamisen and tabla work surprisingly well together here, despite originating from different cultures, with the two instruments nimbly playing off each others’ rhythmic and sonic tonalities. Perfect for transportive deep listening, we highly recommend listening to this one from start to finish on a proper system.
