What makes a song spooky? Does the spook come from particular melodies or instruments – eerie synthesizers, ghostly strings, howling vocals? Or is it a certain coldness and emptiness to the sound, perhaps from drum machines or some haunted reverb? Maybe it’s just a general feeling of unease, something strange and terrible…

Surely, spooky sounds take all shapes and forms so this year we’ve decided to explore as many genres and styles as we could, while still maintaining some sense of cohesion. We start this playlist off with a bit of jazz & blues, head into dub, then deep in the dance with disco, italo, synth-pop, new wave, and end our session with some guitar music.
