The debut album by French band Space is a cosmic disco classic that has been called the long-lost predecessor of Daft Punk. Visually and sonically, the group shares much in common with the French house duo with their astronaut helmets and melodic synthesizer-led sound. The live drums and percussion are perhaps the biggest indicator that this is clearly a ’70s disco project, though the playing from American drummer Joe Hammer is about as robotic and machine-like that you can get. Beyond their influence on Daft Punk, Space’s legacy also lives on through their inclusion in the 2024 Paris Olympics — “Carry On, Turn Me On” was played in the opening ceremony as the Olympic torch was being carried along the River Seine towards the eventual lighting of the cauldron.
