Al B. Sure! got his start in 1987 when he was handpicked by Quincy Jones as the winner of the Sony Innovators Award, an annual talent showcase for promising new talent. He went on to release his debut album in 1988 at just 19 years old with help from Teddy Riley, the producer credited with the creation of new jack swing, and Andre Harrell, the founder of Uptown Records. In Effect Mode seamlessly integrates electronic beats and smooth synths with soulful instrumentation creating a sonic landscape that’s both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Opener “Nite And Day” became a chart-topping hit and set the tone for the rest of the record with its sensuality and romantic undertones. In 2022, Al B. Sure! suffered a stroke while in the studio and slipped into a two year coma. Thankfully, he’s since made a full recovery and continues to make music. – Ally
