A highly underrated lovers rock classic. Bassist George Oban formed “Motion” to explore his own unique musical ideas after leaving the legendary UK reggae group Aswad. His departure may have seemed strange at the time given the group’s success, but listening to Motion’s self-titled debut, it’s clear that Oban had a distinct musical vision and voice that needed to be heard outside of the confines of Aswad’s more straightforward roots sound. Motion is a perfect fusion of Oban’s reggae, rock, jazz, funk, and latin influences and pulls off something of a musical magic trick by very clearly incorporating elements and grooves from those genres, yet still retaining complete originality. The tracks are incredibly varied and all enjoyable – from mellow lovers rock “Rainbow” and “Walk on By”, to soulful jazz fusion “You Love me Only,” to more upbeat dance numbers “Basshoven” and “Crazy Beat.” It’s a complete, perfectly executed musical vision and sadly, the only album ever released by the group. This one isn’t on streaming platforms so check the YouTube playlist or seek the vinyl out for yourself!
