Prince – For You
When Prince entered the studio to lay down the tracks on For You, the stakes were high. He would be the youngest artist in Warner Bros. history to produce his own album and record every part on it himself. The label put together a kind of test: not only did they monitor him in the studio, but they told him, “Every time you go into the recording booth, you have to play like this is your only shot.” Needless to say, the test paid off, and it was on this record that Prince would play all 27 instruments and lay the groundwork for what would become the “Minneapolis Sound.” It’s one of the best showings of Prince’s pure untamed genius and remains an indelible time capsule of his early music.
