Shirley Scott – One for Me
Pianist and Hammond B-3 master Shirley Scott aka the “Queen of the Organ” has released music on some of the greatest jazz labels including Impulse!, Prestige, Blue Note, and Strata-East. Born in Philadelphia, Scott grew up an admirer of Jimmy Smith and would later go on to develop her own uniquely melodic, yet deeply bluesy, gospel-influenced style. She’d also help define the sound of small-group soul-jazz through her work with saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. One for Me, released on Strata-East, is Scott’s most deeply personal work and features Billy Higgins on drums and one of the “unsung tenor saxophonists” of his time Harold Vick. “All of the music recorded in this album is both personal and very purposeful to me, because it is the first step toward honesty about what and how I want to play. I’ve done a lot of other albums, a lot of different ways for a lot of different people, and now, with the help of the Creator, in whom all things are possible, I have done one for me too.”
