Billy Higgins

The Crusaders were a prolific jazz group popular in the early 1970s that released over 40 albums. Primarily a sextet comprised of Joe Sample (piano), Wilton Felder (tenor saxophone), Nesbert “Stix” Hooper (drums), Wayne Henderson (trombone), Hubert Laws (flute), and Henry Wilson (bass), the group played a wide range of sounds including hard bop, fusion, jazz-funk soul, R&B, and pop. Those Southern Knights is a classic from their late prime in the ’70s and a bargain bin find that should be picked up specifically for A2 “Keep That Same Old Feeling.” A relaxed groove with an uplifting message, the track is somehow both incredibly smooth and soulful while also “rippin'” in a jazz sense with various solos and improvisation throughout.
