Various – Disco Not Disco (Leftfield Disco Classics From The New York Underground)
Compiled by Joey Negro (Dave Lee) and Sean P, Disco Not Disco is one of the great and essential compilations from the ’00s. Released on Strut Records, the collection draws on the outer limits of leftfield disco championed by legendary NY DJ’s Larry Levan, David Mancuso, and Nicky Siano. A post-punk energy flows through all the tracks from no wave dance-punk group Liquid Liquid to Bill Laswell’s electro band Material and Arthur Russell’s one-time project Dinosaur, which featured Talking Heads’ David Byrne on guitar. Interestingly, the loft classic “Macho City” by Steve Miller Band was included on earlier versions of this compilation, but has since been replaced by Nicky Siano’s wild party starter “Move.” No worries though – Steve Miller Band’s Circle of Love (which includes that track) can be easily found in bargain bins!
